When I first began reading
Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse by Kaleb Nation, I was immediately reminded of another book series that I was particularly fond of reading. That other series was Harry Potter. At first, I wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. Good because of the fact that Harry Potter is one of my favorite book series. Or bad because it was
too much like Harry Potter. However, while reading
Bran Hambric, I realized that it was a good thing. Bran may have had many similarities to Harry Potter, but it is the quality of the story and Kaleb's writing that holds your attention, keeps you reading, and makes you not want to put the book down- and trust me, Bran Hambric is one book you won't want to put down. You become engrossed in Bran-- a story of a six-year-old boy found in a bank vault, whose mother is a criminal because her crime was magic. Though, there is so much more to the story than that.
Two of my favorite parts of the book are the beginning and the end- prologue and epilogue. I won't be giving away any spoilers, so not to worry. However, I thought the prologue was the perfect way to set up the story. It informed you without giving away too much, so that you still wanted to find out what happens next. And the epilogue was very ironically funny. I actually laughed because it was something I wasn't expecting. I think it really showed off Kaleb's unique sense of humour. Another thing I enjoyed about the book was the parts with the, Wilomases (Bran's adoptive family). The Wilomases are all extremists in their own way, and I found that very interesting. For example, Sewey thinks he's the most brilliant man ever to live- when, in fact, he's really not. It's the small things that make Bran Hambric such a great book. Small details usually make a big difference. And Kaleb seems to have been paying attention to the small details when writing Bran Hambric- he describes the city of Dunce very well, helping the reader understand the world of this story.
I do have a tendency to get long-winded, but I'll try to get straight to the point with this review. I definitely recommend reading Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse by Kaleb Nation. It's a great book full of mystery, magic, and intrigue. So, kudos to Kaleb for a job and book well done!
To end this review, I'll leave off with one of my favorite quotes from Bran hambric: The Farfield Curse. I had many, so it was difficult to narrow it down. I liked the imagery in this short quote, though. Anyways, here it is:
"Bran felt as if he were a wanderer and had for the first time in his life found books about his homeland..." (Bran Hambric, pg. 100)
