ECN was very lucky to have the chance to interview Kaleb Nation (who some of you may know as
The Twilight Guy) via
Paul Samuelson. So, thank you to Paul and Kaleb for making this possible-- it is so very much appreciated! I'm a huge fan of Kaleb and his work, so I can't express enough how much of an honor this was.
The questions I asked are very general because I had only read a few pages of Bran Hambric (Kaleb's upcoming book) at the time I asked them. In addition, whenever I mentioned Bran Hambric to people, I was surprised to find out a lot of people didn't know what it was about. So, "getting-to-know-Bran" questions seemed to be the way to go! Bran Hambric comes out on September 9, 2009-- so I hope this interview enourages many of you to go out and buy it!
For those who may not know much about your book, can you please
explain what Bran Hambric is all about?
It is the story of a boy named Bran who was found locked in a bank vault
at six years old with no memory of who he was or how he got there. When
Bran is 14, a creature appears at his house and tried to kidnap him, and
afterwards Bran slowly begins to uncover the dark secrets of his past,
who he really is, and why people are searching so desperately for him.
The book is set in an alternate world with magic and gnomes, even though
Bran lives in a city where magic is still illegal.
Do you think Twilight fans will enjoy reading Bran Hambric?
If you enjoyed the action and the mystery in Twilight, I think you will
enjoy Bran Hambric!
It took you six years to write Bran, was there ever a point where
you thought you wouldn't finish writing? What kept you motivated?
I'm sure that there were times that I wondered if I'd ever finish the
book, but I actually can't recall any of them. I think that I always had
a strange motivation to finish it, and get it published, that kept me
moving. Being an author has always been my dream, and I wanted to follow
it until I got there.
Are there any characters in Bran that you think are most like you?
I think that all of my characters have certain pieces of me in them,
some more than others. I didn't know it for years, but I think that Bran
is actually a lot like me in ways. Just as I enjoy writing, Bran enjoys
drawing. We have a lot of similar quirks that I don't even notice until
I go back and re-read what I wrote!
What are some books that you enjoy and would recommend?
I loved the Lemony Snicket series. I also really enjoyed Artemis Fowl,
and of course, Twilight!
You are pretty well known as 'The Twilight Guy.' However, you have
your own book coming out soon...would you mind being called 'The Bran
Guy' instead?
I don't think I would mind being called the Bran Guy! TwilightGuy has
been a wonderful experience for me, but I hope to be known more for my
own writing one day.
You are now working on Bran Hambric 2-- the sequel to Bran Hambric:
The Farfield Curse. Are you finding it easier to write Bran Hambric 2
as opposed to Bran Hambric 1?
It is certainly easier to write the sequel, because I have already gone
through all the stages of developing my voice and learning how to write.
Now I can just focus on the characters and the story.
Have you decided how long the Bran Hambric series is going to be?
Yes, I have six books planned. But there is a lot I am planning for the
sixth book, so it might spill over into a seventh if there's too much to
fit!
You have a lot on your plate-- successful websites, finishing
Breaking Dawn, a book on the way, videos, scheduled events, and I read
you're moving. How do you manage to keep up with it all?
It becomes very important to prioritize and schedule things for specific
times! There is so much to do, and I make a lot of to-do lists every
day. It's like juggling: you just have to keep it all balanced and
things going by itself.
